Flights Delayed After Evacuation At Piarco Airport
On Sunday December 30th, a gas leak was reported at Trinidad’s Piarco International Airport. An evacuation was required for all staff at the Piarco Area Control Centre at approximately 12:30 pm.
Subsequently, flights set for Grenada were diverted to Puerto Rico, Punta Cuna and Santo Domingo. Airlines such as Delta Airlines, Caribbean Airlines, Sunwing were diverted, with some delays lasting up to 6 hours.
A statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority said that the discharge came from a fire extinguisher which occurred during routine maintenance, and not a gas leak.
The discharge occurred during routine maintenance of the Fire Suppression System which was being carried out by an external contractor.
Full operations at the Area Control centr resumed at around 3 PM.
