The Reggae/Windrush Connection
Opened on October 26th, the Bass Culture 70/50 exhibition explores the transformation of music in the UK since the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush in 1948.
Curator Adrian Boot said that the exhibit offers a refreshing perspective of how those who came to the UK have contributed immensely to its culture.
The exhibit, a four-week exhibition which showcases the advent of British reggae, features artwork, films and live performances. It is held in collaboration with Bass Culture Research AHRC, Black Cultural Archives, the British Library, SOAS, Goldsmiths University, Urbanimage, Camera Press and Fully Focused.
Bass Culture Research rose from a three-year Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project seeking to explore the impact of Jamaican music in the United Kingdom.
