India Institutes Weight Guidelines For Book Bags
Growing concerns over the weight of school bags for young children has led the government of India to implement weight codes.
The government cited studies that showed that heavy book bags can negatively impact soft, developing spines in younger children.
A survey involving 2,500 children found that 88% of children from seven to thirteen years of age, carry more than 45 % of their body weight in book bags on their backs.
It also showed that many pre-teens suffer mild back pain from carrying their educational books, which can further develop into chronic back pain, possibly turning into hunchback later on.
