UWI Students and Police Clash
Two students from the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) were taken into custody after clashing with police during a campus protest.
The protest was to draw attention to the worrying security concerns on the campus, with recent attacks of students reported. The Student Guild wants the campus administration to take steps to ensure that the students and faculty, to an extent, are safe.
Students blocked the south gate to the campus, preventing persons and vehicles from passing.
Police were called in and then when tensions flared as the students shouted and chanted, forming a human chain, making the work of the security force more difficult.
Two students who were involved in the gate protest were considered to be violent and aggressive towards officers and were subsequently retrained and taken into custody.
